We have a duty not only naturally to our birds, but also under the law to ensure that their welfare comes first. Here are some details: - All our birds have been bred and trained by ourselves. They are in fact white homing doves a variety of the Rock Dove (Columba livia).
- Our display birds are Java Doves (Streptopelia risoria) and are a fully domesticated species who would not survive in the wild and are are not a homing variety. They therefore will not be released under any circumstances. Their cages will be locked to prevent accidental or unauthorised release.
- Our birds live in an aviary designed for their cleanliness, health and management which consists of a handling area where the birds are husbanded and treated and their feed and equipment is kept, a large number of nesting boxes for shelter and breeding, an enclosed loft for night time, and a covered and wired in aviary section, for protection from weather, foxes and cats, with an exit/entrance hatch so they can come and go as they please. (Unlike racing pigeons which are allowed out generally only for exercise, racing and training, our birds can fly freely. We manage and contain them only after sunset when they have stopped flying, and returned to their aviary.)
- They are inoculated against Paramyxovirus, and they are further treated with ivermectin to prevent parasites. The loft and aviary are cleaned daily with nesting and bedding materials changed as required. Fresh water is available at all times, as is bathing water. They are fed mainly on a special mixed seed blend from Belgium, with treats of linseed, other vegetable matter and protein such as boiled egg. There is a supply of grit and minerals for their greater health.
- Our birds are trained on a regular basis to leave the release basket and fly home, their homing instinct is improved by training and actual flights, so even when they are not at a ceremony they may be out in flight.
- We generally use our male birds for release and feed them only lightly before an event. This gives them the incentive to return to the loft for food and their mate, with whom they pair for life.
- We will not release our birds in adverse weather conditions i.e. fog, thunder, lightning, rain, heavy mist or dense cloud, nor at a time when they can not fly and arrive safely back to their Dove Cote 30 minutes before sunlight fades. This generally means that we will not release them after two hours before sunset.
- We follow guidelines set by the Royal Pigeon Racing Association, and the International White Dove Society, both of which we are a member. Our birds are transported in approved containers and only transferred to Release Baskets or Cages prior to release.
We do not allow any unsupervised release. At every event we will have a knowledgeable release co-ordinator present. We do not ship our birds by courier for self-release, nor release them indoors. Doves perch to mess. At take off, and in flight, a dove's instinct is simply to fly. None of our clients or their guests have experienced a direct hit! We must stress that although highly unlikely, should a bird mess during the event we cannot be held responsible. We do carry cleaning requisites if required. As these are live birds trained only as homing birds we can not guarantee that they will perform exactly as expected and can not be held liable for their actions when released from their basket. While birds are being held for display, they will be held in baskets that are large enough to be comfortable and safe. The birds will have adequate supplies of water and food, and will not be contained for excessive periods. The baskets or cages will be kept in safe areas, not too hot or too cold, and their temperature monitored. Full terms and conditions on request.
